"Let ancestors residing on Earth attain an evolved region and ancestors living on a higher plane of existence 'in heaven' never degrade. Let the ones who are at a medium plane of existence, attain a higher plane. Let the ancestors who symbolise the Truth protect us."
What Is Pind
Symbolically used for doing tarpan of the departed souls, Pind constitutes a round ball made of mixture of wheat and rice flour. It also contains some sesame seeds that are mixed along with some milk and honey. In all seven balls are made for doing the ritual offerings.
As a mandatory rite that is believed to bring salvation to departed souls, Pind Daan/Shradh, Shraadh is a must to do obligation of all Hindus or followers of Hindu religion. Further, it is also believed that no work can be successfully performed without blessings of ancestors and the doing of Pind Daan/Shradh, Shraadh invokes blessings of the dead ancestors and deceased parents by helping them come to peace.

From Preta To Petru
The soul that leaves the physical body is called Preta. On the 11th day after the doing of the shraddha (Shradh, Shraadh), the soul is raised to the status of Pitru or Ancestor. Pitrus are forefathers/ancestors who dwell in Pitruloka. There are three stages in ancestral life like father, grandfather and great grandfather, and mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Beyond them it is considered that either they have taken Rebirth or have attained Nirvana.
Citing from Garud Puran
As per Garud Puran, Pind Daan/Shradh, Shraadh ritual helps the souls of the dead to cross over the Vaitarni River. Here, the relatives of the dead who do Gau Daan or donation of cows to Brahmins also helps the dead sprits as it is this cow that helps it to cross this dangerous river safely to the other side.
